cosmetic dentistry: porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers, otherwise know as laminates, are very thin coverings that are cutom made to fit over your existing tooth, and are a great way to improve your smile. Porcelain veneers can be used to whiten stained or dark teeth, fix chipped or broken teeth, change misshaped teeth or even re-align crooked teeth using a process called instant orthodontics.

the consultation: The first appointment is a consultation to show you how veneers can change your smile. Together, you and your cosmetic dentist will pick a color, shape and size for your new smile. Impressions are taken for the laboratory to make a mockup in wax of your teeth.

Your cosmetic dentist will work with you to make any adjustments in their appearance. Once you have approved the mock up, the treatment begins.

the preparation: At the preparation appointment, your cosmetic dentist will numb your teeth with local anesthetic so that you are comfortable and don't feel any pain. Then the teeth are shaped with the dental drill to accommodate the very thin but very strong laminate veneer.

An impression is then taken to make a working stone model for the dental laboratory. Temporary veneers are placed on the teeth in order to protect your natural teeth. The temporaries are usually fabricated from the mock up to help you get used to your new teeth.

the application: At the cementation appointment, the temporary veneers will be removed and your new porcelain veneers will be fitted. Assuming that you are happy with the shape, color and overall appearance of your new smile, the veneers are permanently bonded into place.

cost of porcelain veneers:Porcelain veneers are much more expensive than composite veneers, but can last 2 to 3 times as long as composite without discoloration. The average cost of porcelain veneers is between $1000 and $2500 per tooth.

results: Your porcelain veneers will look, feel and work like your own teeth. With regular cleanings and good oral hygiene, you should keep your beautiful smile for 10 to 20 years or longer with your new porcelain veneers.
