breast lift (mastopexy) recovery

Immediately after breast lift surgery, your breasts may be higher than you had anticipated and if you have had a Weis pattern mastopexy (anchor scar) then they may have a square or boxy shape to them. Be patient. Your breast surgeon has anticipated that in the next several weeks, the skin will relax as you heal and as swelling dissipates, and the breasts will round out and settle nicely into their new, lifted position.

discomfort - Discomfort after breast lift surgery is usually mild since only the skin is cut. Some patients use narcotic pain medicine for a few days, while many do fine with just extra strength Tylenol.

sutures - Regardless of the type of mastopexy that you had, it is likely that your surgeon will have placed dissolvable sutures underneath the skin to lend extra support during the healing process. This will help to prevent scar thickening and widening. You may also have external sutures that are either dissolvable or need to be removed 7 to 10 days after surgery.

bandages - You may have some gauze bandages over the incisions for the first day or two to absorb any spots of blood. After surgery, you will be also placed in a support bra. It is especially important that you follow your doctor's instructions on wearing the bra since inadequate support can lead to scarring, splitting of incisions, or early return of breast sagging.

swelling - Swelling after a breast lift is usually mild, but the more extensive your lift, the more likely that you will have some swelling.Cold packs and compression garments will help to control the swelling, as will keeping your activity to a minimum. Sleeping with a couple extra pillows under your head and shoulders or in a reclining chair will further help to reduce swelling.

bruising - It is not uncommon to have bruising on the breasts after breast lift surgery. If you notice an enlarging bruise that feels firm, especially that is causing increasing pain, call your doctor. This may be a hematoma (blood collection) that needs treatment.

activity - Your activity after surgery will be limited to speed your healing and decrease the risk of complications. Although walking should not be a problem, speed walking or any activities that increase your heart rate or involve bouncing are discouraged for at least the first 2 weeks after surgery. 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, your doctor may allow you to return to full activities, but be sure to wear a good support bra to prevent excess pull on the breasts that can contribute to recurrence of your breast sagging.

nerve sensation - Some women do experience changes in nipple or breast sensation after mastopexy surgery. The sensation usually returns to normal within a month or so after surgery. As the nerves recover, you may feel shooting pains or electrical shock sensations. Although bothersome, this is actually a good sign that your sensation is returning. Advil or aspirin may help alleviate these sensations, as may Vitamin E, but check with your doctor before taking these medications as they can cause bleeding.
